A 1-year old girl died after being left behind in a car for nearly 10 hours amid sweltering temperatures in Texas, authorities said Friday.

The baby was found in the backseat by her mother at around 6 p.m. on Thursday and was pronounced dead at the scene, ABC 13 reported. She had been locked inside since 8:30 a.m. on a day where temperatures reached 95 degrees in the Houston-area.

Her mother had driven the toddler and her two other children, ages 5 and 3, to daycare that morning, where she dropped off the two eldest, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told the outlet. She returned home believing she had dropped off all of the children.

The mom went about her day, and switched vehicles at some point, Gonzalez said.

She returned to the daycare center in the evening expecting to pick up all three of her kids, when she learned that only the two older siblings had been dropped off, the sheriff said.

The tragic incident marks the 20th hot car death this year, according to national nonprofit KidsAndCars.org. Texas ranks No. 1 in the country for hot car deaths, with a total of 145 fatalities since 1991.

Earlier this week, twin toddler boys who were left for nine hours in a hot car outside a daycare center in Georgia likely died of heat stroke.

Two weeks ago, a 3-year-old Alabama boy died after being found unresponsive in a scorching car outside his family’s home, authorities said.

A 5-year-old boy died in Virginia in August after being left in a hot SUV for several hours.
