Authorities have busted a man wearing a fake Border Patrol uniform and driving a bogus Border Patrol vehicle in Arizona, along with 10 illegal immigrants, an immigration official has announced.
Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol agents made the arrests near Tucson, John Modlin, interim chief patrol agent for the Tucson Sector said in a Twitter posting Tuesday.
Modlin linked to a picture of the vehicle that bears a distinct similarity to an official Border Patrol SUV.
“This is not a Border Patrol vehicle,” he wrote.
The arrest of the illegal immigrants comes amid the Biden administration struggling to contain the crisis of record illegal crossings at the southern border — as Customs and Border Protection said more than 212,000 illegal immigrants were stopped trying to cross the border last month.
The number of attempts to cross the US-Mexico border has risen every month since President Joe Biden took office in January.
Already this year, there have been more than 1.1 million illegal border crossings.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was caught on leaked audio telling border agents in Texas that the situation at the border “cannot continue” because the system wasn’t designed to handle the influx of immigrants on such a massive scale.
“A couple of days ago I was down in Mexico, and I said, ‘Look, you know, if, if our borders are the first line of defense, we’re going to lose and this is unsustainable,’” Mayorkas said during the meeting earlier this month in Brownsville.
“We can’t continue like this, our people in the field can’t continue and our system isn’t built for it,” he said.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced last week that he would keep members of the National Guard on the border for another year to boost security.
“The Biden-Harris administration has utterly failed to secure the border,” Ducey said in a statement. “It’s clear that this White House has neither the ability nor the desire to address the border disaster — a crisis of their own making.”
