Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Sunday that he supports issuing subpoenas to members of Congress about the Capital riot — including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Kinzinger of Illinois is one of two Republicans picked by House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi to investigate the riots.
“I would support subpoenas to anyone that could shed light on [what happened Jan 6]. If that’s the leader [McCarthy], that’s the leader,” Kinzinger told ABC News.
“If it’s anyone that talked to the president that can provide us that information, I want to know what the president was doing every moment of that day after he said, ‘I’m going to walk with you to the Capitol,’ ” added Kinzinger, an outspoken critic of former President Trump.
“If anybody’s scared of this investigation, I ask you one question: What are you afraid of?” the rep said. “I mean, either you’re afraid of being discovered having some culpability in it or what?
“If you think it wasn’t a big deal, then you should allow this to go forward,” he said of the controversial probe.
Kinzinger, asked if he intended to try to speak with Trump as part of the investigation, did not rule out the move but said it may ultimately not be necessary.
“I don’t know. It depends where the facts lead,” the congressman said. “We may not even have to talk to Donald Trump to get the information. There were tons of people around him. There were tons of people involved in the things that led up to Jan. 6.
“Obviously if you talk to the former president, that’s going to have a whole new set of kind of like everything associated with it. So when I look at that, I’m like ‘maybe.’ But I know we’re going to get to the information,” Kinzinger said. “If he has unique information, that’s one thing. But I think there’s a lot of people around him that knew some things.”
The other Republican on the panel investigating the deadly riot is Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-Wy.).
The panel held its first hearing earlier this week, where four law-enforcement officers — including two Capitol Hill cops — testified.
Moderate GOP Sen. Susan Collins on Sunday ripped Pelosi’s “partisan” committee tasked with investigating the riot, blaming her for handpicking GOP members rather than letting McCarthy choose them.
“I fought very hard to have an independent, bipartisan, non-partisan outside commission to look at all the events of that day, and I’m very disappointed that it was not approved,” Collins of Maine told CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“I think it would have had far more credibility than Speaker Pelosi’s partisan committee that she has set up,” Collins said of the California Democrat.
