A 12-year-old boy was killed and a 19-year-old woman was seriously injured after a freight train barreled into their car in California’s Bay Area on Wednesday, officials and reports said.
The vehicle had been heading west on East Cypress in the city of Oakley at about 1 p.m., just before the deadly crash on the tracks, city officials said in a Twitter post.
The boy, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Joshua Schaefer, by his mom, Melissa Schaefer, The East Bay Times reported.
The driver, a 19-year-old woman, was airlifted to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.
The collision involved two other vehicles, local media reports said – although it wasn’t clear if those vehicles were also struck by the train or damaged by debris sent flying from the initial crash.
The impact flipped one vehicle and after the crash a victim with head injuries was coming in and out of consciousness, an official with the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District told the East Bay Times.
Three others were also hurt in the crash, NBC Bay Area reported.
Details of how the crash unfolded weren’t immediately disclosed.
Officials urged locals to avoid the roadway in the city, which is about 55 miles outside of San Francisco.
This is the second train crash in Contra Costa County in a week, after an Amtrak plowed into a truck on the tracks in nearby Orwood last week, the Times stated.
