Dramatic video captured the moment Ohio firefighters rescued a dog who was trapped between two concrete walls after going missing five days earlier.

The Cincinnati smoke-eaters responded about 9:40 a.m. Sunday to a homeowner’s call about a dog crying behind the garage wall on Thompson Heights, WXIX reported.

Gertie had escaped from her home on Tuesday and her owners put up missing posters around the neighborhood.

Vanessa Roland, an area resident who saw a flier, said she alerted a neighbor who owns the garage. The homeowner then called the fire department after noticing the dog through a hole in the attic floorboards.

Roland also called the number on the poster to alert the dog’s owners, Connie Frick and Lynn Herman.

“She escaped as Lynn was coming in the front door on Tuesday … went right into the woods,” Frick told the news outlet.

They had found Gertie in the garage before but this time the peripatetic pooch didn’t return right away.

When the firefighters arrived, they realized that Gertie had somehow fallen down a crevice and became wedged between the two walls of the nearby garage.

Firefighters had to break the concrete with saws and a sledgehammer to rescue Gertie because they could not lift her out of the tight squeeze. After about 10 minutes, they finally broke through the wall and removed the dusty dog to applause.

The dog was quickly rushed over to her owners, who said she was tired from the ordeal but otherwise OK.

“It was just so sweet, just wagging that little nub tail, and she was just so, she was so excited,” Frick told WXIX.
