Alex Murdaugh was breathless and repeatedly broke down in tears when he told police his wife and son had been shot dead, according to a haunting recording of his 911 call to cops released on Thursday.
The high-profile South Carolina attorney told the dispatcher he had been away and came home to find the two bloodied bodies.
“I’ve been up to it now, it’s bad,” Murdaugh is heard telling Colleton County dispatcher Angel Fraser during the June 7 call.
“OK, and are they breathing?”
“No, ma’am,” Murdaugh tells Fraser.
“And you said it’s your wife and your son?” the dispatcher asks.
“My wife and my son,” he says.
“Are they in a vehicle?”
“No ma’am,” Murdaugh responds. “They’re on the ground out in my kennel.”
The recordings were released under a Freedom of Information Act request filed by fitsnews.com with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
No suspects have been official named in the deaths of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and the couple’s 22-year-old son, Paul, inside their Colleton County property.
Both were shot multiple times, authorities said.
Alex Murdaugh is a prominent attorney and scion of one of South Carolina’s most influential legal dynasties — his firm, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Derrick, was founded by his great-grandfather in 1910.
But the family was also facing controversy at the time of the shootings. Paul Murdaugh was facing charges in the 2019 boating death of teenager Mallory Beach.
He was identified early on as a person of interest in the killings, but authorities acknowledged that he also has a solid alibi, fitsnews reported.
In the 6 1/2-minute 911 call, Murdaugh tells Fraser he had been away and found the bodies when he came home — urging the dispatcher to “please hurry” several times.
“I don’t want you to touch them at all, OK?” Fraser tells him. “I don’t know if you’ve already touched them but I don’t want you to touch them just in case they can get any kind of evidence, OK?”
“I already touched them trying to get, trying to see if they were breathing,” he answers.
Fraser then tells Murdaugh to turn his vehicle’s hazard lights so cops could find the scene more easily, which he says he did.
He hung up after saying, “Ma’am, I need to call some of my family.”
