The field is taking shape for this year’s All-Star Home Run Derby with the inspiring addition of Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini.
Mancini, 29, missed the entire 2020 MLB season after he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer, but after undergoing treatment he has returned to lead the Orioles with 14 home runs and 52 RBI.
Mancini joins 2019 Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso of the New York Mets and two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels as participants in the eight-player competition.
On Saturday, the sports agency that represents Mancini confirmed he’s accepted an invitation to this year’s event, July 12 at Coors Field in Denver.
Mancini finished third in the AL rookie of the year voting in 2017 and was coming off a career-best season in 2019 when he hit .291 with 35 homers and 97 RBI. But last spring, he was diagnosed with colon cancer after routine tests uncovered low iron levels.
He underwent treatment, which included chemotherapy and the removal of a malignant tumor. He returned to the Orioles with a standing ovation in this season’s opener and has played in 75 of the team’s first 77 games.
