Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is thankfully OK after a scary collapse during a Euro 2020 match against Finland on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Denmark team doctor informed reporters Eriksen actually underwent cardiac arrest at one point during his medical emergency.
“Well, he was gone,” Boesen said, according to English newspaper The Times. “We did cardiac resuscitation. And it was cardiac arrest.”
Boesen told reporters he’s spoken with Eriksen, and the soccer star is in stable condition, doing “OK considering the circumstances.”
Eriksen will remain in the hospital for further tests and observation.
Eriksen had been walking near the sideline during the 43rd minute during a throw-in when he appeared to stagger and then fall forward to the pitch. Teammates called and gestured to trainers on the sideline to rush in for assistance and play was stopped immediately.
Responders performed a “cardiac massage” after finding Eriksen, breathing and with a pulse, on his side.
But doctors quickly lost those signs of life, leading to the use of a defibrillator, Boesen said. By the time he left the field, Eriksen was alert and able to speak with Boesen, the doctor said.
“How close were we (to losing him)? I don’t know,” Boesen said. “We got him back after one defib, so that’s quite fast.”
No cause of the scare has been determined.
Eriksen, 29, currently plays for Inter Milan and spent seven season with Tottenham Hotspur.
