From now through the holiday, the website is featuring two major discounts: 40% off on its popular AncestryDNA kits and 20% off gift memberships.

That means that standard kits, which provides DNA matches and traces family origins and ethnicity, are $59 instead of the usual list price of $99. The upgraded World Explorer bundle, which includes a standard kit and three-month access to Ancestry’s World Explorer program, offering access to all records and public family trees on the website, and is currently priced at $60 instead of the standard price of $178. There’s also the Ancestry Traits kit, which $69 instead of its standard price of $119, and comes with the site’s Traits feature, currently a $10 add-on, free of charge.

When we tried the standard AncestryDNA kit, our tester found herself with a ton of information to sift through, from her ethnic background to potential DNA matches with other Ancestry members. In fact, we named AncestryDNA the best DNA testing kit of them all for its abilities to untangle the roots of our heritage and connect our DNA to our family tree.

You'll get everything you need in the AncestryDNA test kit, which features a spit tube, return package and activation information.

On top of that, we loved the detailed background about exactly which regions our ancestors may have hailed from and the context the site provided courtesy of its industry-leading database (Ancestry boasts more than 18 million members, a number that’s significantly higher than competing companies).

We also tested the site’s Traits feature (available in an All Access bundle for $149 or as an add-on to the test for $10) and found it to be a worthwhile addition. Traits includes a breakdown of different physical and sensory characteristics and allows you to compare your results to other Ancestry members through DNA and trait matching by region.

Our commerce editor, Courtney Campbell, was able to easily see what characteristics she was likely to have based on her DNA, ranging from her iris patterns and hair type to whether or not she was predisposed to enjoy the taste of cilantro. Though she noted that the results from Traits weren’t always 100% accurate (she very much enjoys cilantro, despite what the test suggested), she praised the wealth of information that came from each one.

AncestryDNA Traits can show you insights about your genetic traits.

If you’re planning to pick up a test for the father figure in your life, here’s the process: Ancestry will mail him the test, which asks for a sample of saliva mixed with an included solution in a tube. Dad will send that test back to Ancestry, and within two to four weeks (longer if you send tests back during the holidays or other busy periods) he’ll get his results.

If you’re looking to really wow pops at the end of the month, check out Ancestry and help him get in touch with his roots—there’s so much information to be discovered, and these prices will only last through Sunday, June 20.
