Actor Sacha Baron Cohen called out Twitter and its founder over a rise in anti-Semitism on social media amid the recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“The surge in antisemtism on the streets is fueled by antisemistism on social media,” the Borat actor posted on Twitter on Saturday, tagging both the platform and CEO Jack Dorsey.
“Why do you allow #HitlerWasRight ?!” he wrote. “Those who celebrate the Holocaust aim to perpetuate another. #StopHateForProfit.”
Baron Cohen was apparently reacting to an Anti-Defamation League report released Saturday that said more than 17,000 tweets used variations of the phrase “Hitler Was Right” between May 7 and May 14
“ADL has also seen an increase at times in on-the-ground activity that demonized Israel and that has crossed at times into anti-Semitism,” the ADL report said.
The report came amid a ceasefire between Israeli and Palestinian leaders after days of violence.
There were 193 reports in anti-Semitic incidents in the week after the start of the Gaza Strip conflict, ADL said, up from 131 the previous week.
The 49-year-old filmmaker known for his un-PC humor and the “Da Ali G Show” recently won the Comedic Genius award at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.
He said he was retiring his most famous character, Borat, during the Golden Globes this year, saying it was “probably the most dangerous project I had to work on.”
