The Police in Abia State, southeast Nigeria have confirmed the death of two policemen after a group of unknown gunmen attacked and razed the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital on Saturday.

Addressing the reporters at the State’s police headquarters, the Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said that eight suspects were also shot by the police during the attack while two vehicles were recovered from the hoodlums.

Ogbonna stated that some of the armed men suspected to be members of the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Eastern Security Network, ESN, escaped with bullet wounds during the gun battle.

Independent accounts said that it was like a local movie on Saturday, when some people numbering over 20 with several of them stark naked and others on black attires with red bands attacked the state police formation amidst jubilation of onlookers.

The latest attack on the State CID Umuahia brings to seven, the number of police formations attacked in Abia State by unknown gunmen in the last few months.
