Despite ripping his pants onstage in the middle of a performance, Lil Nas X says his “Saturday Night Live” debut was “my favorite night of my career.”
The 22-year-old singer had plenty of jokes on Twitter before getting sentimental about appearing on the show’s Season 46 finale Saturday night. He performed “Sun Goes Down” and his recent hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” during which a move on a dance pole appeared to cause a wardrobe malfunction.
“MY PANTS RIPPED,” the musician tweeted after the show. “i wanted to do my pole routine so bad this what i get.”
Lil Nas X’s Satan imagery angers parents. But advocates say critics are missing the point.
His performance featured high production values and elaborate choreography, but Lil Nas X (real name: Montero Lamar Hill) noted that the mishap was not among the concepts he had prepared: “i know i do a lot of planned (expletive) but ripping my pants on live television is not one of them.”
Toward the end of the song, the singer made his way toward a dance pole at the back of the stage, where he squatted down before springing up with a surprised look on his face. He continued to dance through the final 30 seconds, using one hand to cover his crotch.
On a more serious note, Lil Nas X noted to fans that he was “afraid to even perform” at first: He and his team ran into a speedbump two weeks into the rehearsal process after one dancer tested positive for COVID-19, forcing all six of them to drop out.
“New ones had to learn the routine in 24 hours, and then i ended up ripping my pants and couldn’t finish. everything happens for a reason tho lol,” he tweeted. “thank u snl for my favorite night of my career!! i love u!”
