Kaduna State Civil Servants have today commenced a strike against the plan of the state government to downsize the public service despite warnings by the state government that it will yield no results.

The Kaduna State workers and members of the National Union of Electricity Employees have begun a warning Strike from today in decry of the anti-labor moves by the state government. The NLC has also condemned the ploy to mass disengagement of workers.

“In line with NLC directives on shut down of activities in Kaduna, you are hereby directed to ensure TOTAL BLACKOUT in Kaduna by 00 hours on Saturday 15th May 2021,” the General Secretary of NUEE, Joe Ajaero

The state government had explained that due to the pandemic civil servants below Level 14 have majorly been staying at home except for essential workers and as such it is highly financially unsustainable to keep spending 84 percent of its federal allocation in servicing salaries and personnel costs since October 2020.

As a result, downsizing was the only way to cope with the fiscal crisis. It also mentioned that attempts to damage public infrastructure by hoodlums will be thwarted by security agencies who are privy to the plans.
